Bi-Directional Cross-Cultural Immersion Program January 2009

A few highlights from the travel blog of the 2009 BCCIP trip

Along with attending professional classes, we have visited counseling psychology training centers and museums. Yesterday we had the opportunity to visit the Native Taiwanese Museum. After going through the museum, I began to see many parallels between the aboriginal culture and history to our American Indian culture and history. I found it fascinating that two different areas in the world can have almost the same experience. [Jessica O.]

As our time here draws to a close, I have been thinking a lot about what I will take away from this immersion experience. One element that stands out, is my increased awareness of how culture influences almost everything we do personally and professionally. For example, through the connections I’ve made here on a personal level as well as the professional classes, I feel I now have a greater understanding of how personal relationships are central to the people of Taiwan and the practice of psychotherapy here. [Pat G.]

Personally, I am soooooo glad that I made the decision to venture out of my comfort zone. This is my first trip to the Eastern Hemisphere, my first time traveling without loved ones, and my first New Year’s Eve away from them. … Yet, I would not trade this experience for anything. [Karen T.]

We have been here only 2 days but we have already created memories that will last a lifetime. … I felt so overwhelmed and grateful that I had the chance to experience such an occasion from a completely different perspective in a different time zone with people I hardly knew but felt so close to. [Marlen K.]

I am impressed by the huge amount of sincere generosity that we are receiving from both the students and faculty here at NTNU. Besides lectures, the faculty and students have arranged many dinners and cultural activities for us. These have all been a blast. [Reid T.]
